March Madness Story

Great win for the Tar Heels on Saturday evening and Lucy is breaking out the Carolina Blue this morning for sure. One of my favorite stories about Carolina basketball is about Coach Dean Smith (who retired in 1997 after 36 years as the head Coach) and how Coach Smith treated his players back in the 1960's.

As you know, the 60's were tumultuous times in our nation, and Smith put himself in the middle of it, repeatedly. He was the first coach in the ACC to have an African American on his team, when he signed Charlie Scott to a scholarship. He would often take his African American recruits to lunch at the most segregated restaurants in Chapel Hill. People would get upset at his audacity and this was before he had established himself as one of the greatest college coaches ever.

Coach Smith did not care, and some felt he was overstepping his bounds and that he was building a platform outside of his coaching responsibilities. This is a great example of going against the 'norm' when you believe you are doing something that is right and good. Think about examples where you have and can do the same thing.

Make it a great Monday,

Dad
