In a million words or fewer

Lucy brought me a homework assignment from her English teacher last night. Her teacher asked that we write something about Lucy in a million words or fewer that would help her get to know Lucy better. I used 394 words . . .

Lucy (May) Singletary came into our lives on March 13, 2000 in Nashville, TN. She was our third daughter and is our youngest child. Her older sisters are both away at college. Sally is a third year interior design student at the University of Georgia and Emily is a first year student at Savannah College of Art & Design. We have been in Texas for ten years and Sally and Emily both graduated from Westlake High School, after attending Hill Country Middle School.

My name is Page Singletary and my wife is Cathy. I am a technology salesman for Autodesk and Cathy is a Physical Therapist and works for Austin ISD. We are looking forward to putting all of our attention on Lucy this year, since the older two have flown the coop! She can’t wait!

We think Lucy is a remarkable girl, perhaps having learned a lot about adolescence from her older sisters. She is very confident in herself, socially and academically, but also humble and caring of others. She has developed a strong passion for dance and hopes to be a member of the Westlake Hyline team one day. She dances five days a week at Balance Studios, where she takes ballet, jazz, tap, jumps/turns, lyrical and company. Balance is a new studio and they stress fitness, community service, and self-reflection in addition to dance.

Lucy has a great sense of humor. Her nickname, around the Singletary house, is Goose, though her mom affectionately calls her Lu. Lucy has a strong faith and enjoys spending a couple of weeks at Laity Lodge Youth Camp in Leaky, TX each summer - a non-denominational Christian based camp experience, where kids can get away from their technology and spend time in nature and in play.

Lucy has a very special Aunt and Uncle named Aunt Di Di and Uncle Pat, who have taken her in as if she was one of their own grandchildren. Lucy gets to spend time in the summers at Di Di’s beach cottage in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with her cousins where she has participated in many fun activities like sailing and drama camps.

We think she is pretty special and we hope you enjoy having her in your class. Thanks for this opportunity to share our thoughts on Lucy.

First Day of School - Make it great!

Hey Sally,

Lucy starts 7th Grade today at Hill Country Middle School. She is an amazing young woman and we are so proud of her.

It looks like Uncle Pat has been helping decorate Aunt Dianne's room for back-to-school as well.

Make it a great Monday,

Dad

Blue Bottle Coffee on Women Power Wednesday

Great logo - great coffee
Sally,

I had my morning cup of coffee on the San Francisco Bay at a place called Blue Bottle Coffee. I noticed the place yesterday and especially noted that there was a long line of people in the mid afternoon waiting for coffee, even though there was a Starbuck's and a Pete's Coffee House within spitting distance of Blue Bottle. It made me wonder what was so special about this place.

At 7 a.m. this morning, the line was not quite as long. I ordered my usual cup of black coffee, and was told it would take three minutes to brew. It was very good coffee. When I read more about the business, I thought about your coffee story this summer and the 'pumpkin' flavor you brewed in your offices.

It is interesting to note the contrarian approach to the business - see example below. The question I have for you is this. How can you look at things that are popular and successful (i.e. Starbuck's) and take a contrarian (opposite) view and create success in your career?

Be different,

Dad

319 years later, in Oakland, California, a slightly disaffected freelance musician and coffee lunatic, weary of the grande eggnog latte and the double skim pumpkin-pie macchiato decides to open a roaster for people who are clamoring for the actual taste of freshly roasted coffee.
