Jackie Robinson - the color barrier

Jackie Robinson (Jan 31, 1919 - Oct 24, 1972)
Hey girls,

Taking a step away from Daniel Pink today, to share a couple of stories that caught my eye this week. The first was the birthday of Jackie Robinson, who would have been 94 yesterday. Jackie was the first black major league baseball player of the modern era. "The example of his character and unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of segregation, which then marked many other aspects of American life, and contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement" (Wikipedia)

Take a few minutes to read about Jackie Robinson and then take a look at this story about Jozy Altidore, who was racially abused this week in The Netherlands. It is sad to think that this kind of thing still happens, but look at how gracious Altidore was in handling the situation:
"But Altidore delivered his most impressive performance in the postmatch interview. Rather than berate his tormentors, he insisted on turning the other cheek, stating that he would "pray for them." At which point the outpouring of public support worldwide revealed that in the battle against racism, Altidore has immense backing. He was inundated by emails, tweets and calls to his charitable foundation."
What a class guy!

Stay fit,

Dad
