Fit as a Fiddle Friday

Sally,

Lucy provided this great tid-bit for Fit as a Fiddle Friday. Do you know what an 'aglet' is? She tells me that is the word for the little hard tip on the end of a shoe string! So lace up those running shoes, tuck in those aglets, and hit the road for a run.

Stay fit,

Dad

Stay Whole Tuesday - Great to see my daughter

I meant to get someone to take a picture of us tonight in Athens. It was great to see you and to have a few minutes to visit with your impressive friends. Tell them all thanks for coming out to see me. Here is a photo that is a blast from the past! I heard Hyline is getting new uniforms this spring?

Thanks for being my daughter and stay whole on Tuesday.

Love - Dad

Make it a great Monday

Lucy with her buddy from Haiti.

Stay Whole Tuesday - Good luck, Bad luck, We will see

Dean told this story in Yoga class on Sunday. Mom told it to Lucy yesterday, after she did not get the Nutcracker parts that she wanted . . .
There once was a Taoist farmer. One day the Taoist farmer’s only horse broke out of the corral and ran away. The farmer’s neighbors, all hearing of the horse running away, came to the Taoist farmer’s house to view the corral. As they stood there, the neighbors all said, “Oh what bad luck!” The farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck, we’ll see.”
About a week later, the horse returned, bringing with it a whole herd of wild horses, which the Taoist farmer and his son quickly corralled. The neighbors, hearing of the corralling of the horses, came to see for themselves. As they stood there looking at the corral filled with horses, the neighbors said, “Oh what good luck!” The farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck, we’ll see.”
A couple of weeks later, the Taoist farmer’s son’s leg was badly broken when he was thrown from a horse he was trying to break. A few days later the broken leg became infected and the son became delirious with fever. The neighbors, all hearing of the incident, came to see the son. As they stood there, the neighbors said, “Oh what bad luck!” The farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck, we’ll see.”
At that same time in China, there was a war going on between two rival warlords. The warlord of the Taoist farmer’s village was involved in this war. In need of more soldiers, he sent one of his captains to the village to conscript young men to fight in the war. When the captain came to take the Taoist farmer’s son he found a young man with a broken leg who was delirious with fever. Knowing there was no way the son could fight, the captain left him there. A few days later, the son’s fever broke. The neighbors, hearing of the son’s not being taken to fight in the war and of his return to good health, all came to see him. As they stood there, each one said, “Oh what good luck!” The farmer replied, “Good luck, bad luck, we’ll see.”
Stay whole,

Dad

Stay fit in Athens

My hotel had a great health club this week in Las Vegas. Are you staying fit in Athens? Going to the game tomorrow?

Colloquial Thursday - The Allman Brothers

I took this photo of Duane Allman at the BB King Nightclub in The Mirage last night, here in the crazy city of Las Vegas. It reminded me of your mom, to whom I have been married 23 years this Saturday! You can read about The Allman Brothers here. The band was based in Macon, GA and Duane was killed in Macon when he ran his motorcycle into the rear of a flatbed truck. Your mom tells stories of going to his grave sight to party with her friends. Take a few minutes to read about The Allman Brothers . . .

I love you.

Women Power Wednesday - Uga IX

How's the search for Uga IX coming? Do you think Bailey could be a stand-in until they find the right bulldog? Seems like the team could use a little inspiration from your ball-catching Jack Russell?

Stay Whole Tuesday - Doodling

My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the LORD. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. - Isaiah 55: 8-11
A devotional I read this morning was called: 'Doodling' and it made me think of you and your creativeness. The point of the devotional was to understand that God is the perfect creator. We are just his children, doodling in the margins. What else can we do? Stay whole and have fun doodling . . .

Make it a great Monday - Off to Vegas

Sally,

I hope your week is off to a great start. I am working hard on Atlanta prospecting, before heading to the airport this afternoon. I will be in Las Vegas all week for an Autodesk Sales Meeting. It should be a great chance for me to get to know my group and to learn more about the business.

Lucy seemed great this morning, but I know she missed us this weekend. She especially was not happy about missing the Westlake game on Friday night, since she stayed with a friend who did not go to the game. Emily played well in Waco and is enjoying a well-deserved day away from golf.

Blue skies,

Dad

Fit as a Fiddle Friday - Forgiveness

Sally,

We talked about forgiveness in my Rudy's 360 group this morning. C.S. Lewis says: "Forgiveness is a lovely idea until you have someone to forgive." Also, the Bible says that our Father will not forgive us, if we do not forgive those who sin against us. Check out Matthew 6: 14-15.

Stay fit and forgive others,

Dad

Colloquial Thursday – Coming your way

Sally,

I am working on some prospecting and analysis of leads in the Atlanta market and hope to schedule a trip your way for either the last week of September or the first week of October. So hold the phone, and I will let you know how it shakes out.

Love,

Dad

Hold the phone.
1. and Hold the wire(, please).; Hold, please.; Hold the line(, please).; Hold the phone(, please).; Please hold. Fig. Please wait on the telephone and do not hang up. (A phrase in use before telephone "hold" circuitry was in wide use.) Bill: Hold the wire, please. (Turning to Tom) Tom, the phone's for you. Tom: Be right there. Rachel: Do you wish to speak to Mr. Jones or Mr. Franklin? Henry: Jones. Rachel: Thank you. Hold the line, please. Sue: Good afternoon, Acme Motors, hold please. Bill (hanging up): That makes me so mad!
2. Fig. Wait just a minute.; Don't rush into something. Hold the phone! Let's think about it a little longer. Hold the phone. I just had another idea.

Stay Whole Tuesday - Get Mobilized

Sally,

This is a good article about the importance of 'doing something' even when things may be difficult or not very clear. I know you understand this, because you have jumped into your design major full speed ahead. I am really proud of you for deciding on a career path, and making a move in the direction of pursuing your dreams. That takes courage! And as the article points out, God can work with and through those who take action.

Love,

Dad

Feeling thankful and blessed

Hey Sally,

It is a special Holiday Weekend edition of 'Nuggets' as I feel like sharing a few thoughts this morning for you, and to your sisters, and of course your amazing mom. I am now 2.5 weeks into my new career with Autodesk, and I think things are going well. I am really enjoying learning the Media and Entertainment world, as well as the people on my team. I will be in town all next week, continuing to study the market and the product and then on the road to Las Vegas for a week and New York City after that, to attend a sales meeting and a conference on video editing respectively.

I am glad you made it to Ole Miss safely and I trust you are being careful and safe this weekend. Please be especially smart on the long trip back to Athens, and keep us updated on your time frames. Are you going home on Sunday or Monday? Please time your travels so that it is all during daylight hours.

I found this interesting blog post titled: Even Artists Have to Figure Out a Way to Make a Living. I am so proud of Emily and you for pursuing your passions (fashion and design) and also proud that both of you are looking for 'practical' ways to use your academic pursuits in the real world. It reminds me of Daniel Pink's book, A Whole New Mind, which is subtitled: Why Right Brainers will Rule the World!

I want to share one other thing with you today. As you know, we are still not where we need to be financially because of the lag time that occurs in the payroll cycles when you start a new job in commission sales. (I won't start receiving my full paychecks until the end of October.) I asked Uncle Ricky to help us out with your Chi O room and board, and for that I am very grateful. He is also going to help with Emily's new golf clubs when they arrive. This is important assistance, until my paychecks kick in and (hopefully) allowing us to refinance our equity line on the house. We will pay him back soon, but I just want you to know what a special friend and blessing he is to our family!

I love you,

Dad

Fit as a Fiddle Friday - Please be careful

Sally,

Please be safe, as I know you leave for a long road trip today. Let me know how many girls are going with you and how you plan to divide up the driving? Remember, we are not in a position to pay for car repairs or a lot of extra gas right now. It is also important that you make sure the person driving can fully concentrate on the road and that you maintain a safe speed at all times. Send me a text when you are there safely.

I love you,

Dad

Colloquial Thursday - How the cow ate the cabbage

Yesterday, I used the phrase, 'how the cow ate the cabbage' . . . Here is what I found on that colloquialism.
“How the cow ate the cabbage” is a folk saying of the southern US, most often heard in Texas and Arkansas, and probably dates back to at least the 1940s. It comes from the punchline to a joke that would, in that period, have been considered at least slightly “off-color.” Here goes:
A circus had arrived in a small town, and one morning one of the elephants managed to escape. The fugitive pachyderm made its way to the backyard garden of an elderly (and very near-sighted) woman, where it began hungrily uprooting her cabbages with its trunk and eating them. Alarmed by the apparition in her garden, the woman called the police, saying, “Sheriff, there’s a big cow in my garden pulling up my cabbages with its tail!” “What’s the cow doing with them?” he asked, to which the woman replied, “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you!”
