WPW: Brene Brown (resurfaced)

Hey girls,

I tried getting this out yesterday on WPW, but better (one day) late than not at all. Tim Ferris has reposted his February 2020 podcast with Brene Brown, and I remembered having listened to and shared a bit about it back then.

Stay Whole Peeps - Brene Brown

Back to Brene Brown on WPW

Lots of good stuff. A favorite of mine:

  • Where’s the line between being our best selves or striving for excellence, and embracing who we are? Self-acceptance and complacency? Excellence and beauty in all things and perfectionism that is paralyzing? [19:08]

Dad

FaaFF: Check in on my 2024 fitness goals

Good Fit as a Fiddle Friday,

I'm checking in on my 2024 fitness goals, as outlined here: Happy New Year: My gift to you, and pasted here:

Fitness & Sports:
  • Golf handicap less than or equal to 9 (i.e., single-digits = 9 pars and 9 bogies per round) by taking lessons from Nick and doing my TPI drills for golf-specific fitness.
  • Attend BARCH training classes 4-5 mornings a week with Cathy. Modify workouts to include TPI drills.
  • 15 zero alcohol days per month = feel better, sleep better, get fitter, and live longer.
  • Use my new electric toothbrush every evening.
Working bottom up. The (electric) toothbrush thing has not happened. Shame on me. I do brush my teeth 2-3 times daily!

I am doing quite well on alcohol. I got my 15 zero alcohol days in January and am on my way to the same or even more in February. Over time, alcohol does quite a bit of damage to your body. The good news is most of that damage can be reversed by eliminating or cutting way back. You will also find that you sleep better, think better, create better, and feel better. It is just a fact.

The above non-alcoholic beers have all played a part in my process. A great way to enjoy a drink with colleagues or friends. Plus, I keep a few in the fridge so when the happy hour rolls around, I have an alternative at the ready.

We are crushing it at BARCH. Mom looks fantastic, and I feel terrific about my strength and conditioning.

The golf game has been spotty due to weather conditions, but I expect more progress toward single digits this spring.

Love,

Dad

P.S. 57 days until Emily and Kyle say I do!

WPW: Julia Cameron

Good morning daughters,

It is Woman Power Wednesday.

Your mom shared this podcast recently from Erin & Sara Foster, featuring Julia Cameron, who wrote The Artist's Way. Skip to the 47-minute mark to hear the interview with Julia - a fascinating, remarkable woman.

Here's a short bio from The Artist Way website:

"Hailed by the New York Times as "The Queen of Change," JULIA CAMERON is credited with starting a movement in 1992 that has brought creativity into the mainstream conversation— in the arts, in business, and in everyday life. She is the best-selling author of more than forty books, fiction and nonfiction; a poet, songwriter, filmmaker and playwright. Commonly referred to as "The Godmother" or "High Priestess" of creativity, her tools are based in practice, not theory, and she considers herself "the floor sample of her own toolkit." The Artist's Way has been translated into forty languages and sold over five million copies to date."

Takeaways for me:

  • "Many blocked people are very powerful and creative personalities who have been made to feel guilty about their own strengths and gifts."
  • Find life partners who lift and propel you toward your dreams.
  • How sobriety affects creativity.
  • How jealousy shows us where we're stuck and where we might need to explore getting a little uncomfortable to be more creative.
Good stuff,

Dad

Happy Valentines on SWT

Hey girls and significant others,

Mom and I celebrated our 37th Valentine's together on Saturday in London. We treated ourselves to Deep Tissue Thai Massages before heading to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre for an afternoon performance of Newsies, followed by dinner in Covent Gardens. You can't beat the price and easy access to Broadway shows in London!

And the walk back home, from Covent Gardens to Waterloo Station, across the Waterloo Bridge, always stays young! From Waterloo, the fast train to Richmond is as easy as it gets.

We were happy to see the pictures from Emily's Bachelorette in Mexico but even more pleased to know everyone got home safely.

Happy Valentines,

Dad

WPW on Thursday: Erin Matson

Hey girls,

This is a remarkable story about Erin Matson, the 22-year-old who just became the head coach of the University of North Carolina's Women's Field Hockey team.

"Matson led the Tar Heels to an undefeated national title in November, graduated in December, and was announced as the head coach on Jan. 31."

Matson is often compared to Michael Jordan as the greatest to ever play the sport.

And she is wise beyond her years!

Love,

Dad
