The Churn: What does it mean to love your work

Hey Sally,

How's Ole Miss? Glad you are there safe and trust Alex is taking great care of my girl. In today's churn, I wrote about finding your dream job.

The Churn: Love what you do and know it well

Sally,

I know last night was an interesting one. I am glad you are safe and my heart goes out to the people in Alabama. Lucy just came up to my office because the tornadoes are scary stuff and so are the wild fires we are having here in Texas. We talked about 'fear' and how it is okay to be scared.

I love you,

The Churn: ELU Squared: Do what you love and know it well

Sal Pal,

Did you see my buddy Jack King today? I am hanging at the Apple Store (with my cool friends) before picking up Goose from school. It is a beautiful day in Austin. Next on 'The Churn' we are talking about the importance of 'loving' what you do. It is hard to be a champion sales person if you don't love your chosen field of work. It is also difficult to be an 'expert' in your field, if you do not love your field. Something interesting to think about, as you continue to shape your college experience.

The Churn: The Dan Plan

Sally,

I just had a dynamic meeting with a talented woman by the name of Linda Ginac. She is a friend of Beau Ross, whom we are supporting for school board. Linda has a company by the name of Talent Guard, that focuses on helping companies develop their executive talent. It might turn into something interesting for me, as Beau is considering investing in the company and she needs sales help.

What do you think of the 10,000 hour rule?

The Churn: Likability: The 10,000 Hour Rule

Sally,

I made a slight change to the header description in your blog today. It no longer says, 'a good morning message' since I often need to publish later in the day. I am thinking about changing it further, to reflect my goal of continuing to write to you during the summer months as well. Can you handle that?

I like today's topic about Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers and the 10,000 hour rule. I hope this summer that we can explore my business library and pick one or two business books to study together. What do you think? How could the 10,000 rule be applied to something in your life?

By-the-way, I just talked to my friend Brittany Hoeft about my idea of getting five young professionals together for a series of 'self-branding' meetings this summer. Are you in? I think you will love the group, as I believe it will include some amazing talent.

Make it a great Monday,

Dad

Hey Sally,

Cool Facebook video. Thanks for sharing. We are back from Waco, where Emily played great. She shot 80-79 and finished 11th out of 96 golfers! Lucy is feeling better and was back in school today.

Hope all is well in Athens,

The Churn: ELU Squared – Likability

Sally,

I hope you are well on Stay Whole Tuesday in Athens? Lucy continues to struggle with a nasty virus and her fever shot up again last night, so we are not at a hundred percent here. Emily leaves today for state regional golf tournament in Waco - practice round today and tournament rounds on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thanks for texting me your major last night. You are great with furnishings and interiors. Emily and I were discussing how to combine one's talents with one's passions in a way that the world needs, and that one feels drawn towards . . .

Next on The Churn: Likability. Remember, everybody is a sales person in some capacity.

The Churn: Enthusiasm - Top Ten Quotes

Sally,

I hope your week is off to a good start in Athens. I have an interesting exploratory call this morning with a friend of Greg Petersen's. His name is Greg Alexander and his company is called Sales Benchmark Index. His professional consulting firm is focused exclusively on sales force effectiveness. SBI is more about the 'science' of selling, then the art of selling, as they have developed a method of using data to determine how effective a sales person is within an organization.

Have you been reading my series on what makes a champion sales professional? Remember, whether or not you are ever a sales person, it is my opinion that every effective business person must understand both the science and the art of selling! This is especially important if you want to have your own business.

What is your favorite quote from today's churnOn Top Ten?

Make it a great Monday,

Dad

The Churn: Finding the true voice of enthusiasm

Hey Sally,

I had a meeting this morning with a guy named Thom Singer, who has written several books on self-branding and networking. One book that caught my eye is titled, Some Assembly Required: A Networking Guide for Graduates. I think it might be a good one to go along with my 'churnOn Team Coaching' concept. What do you think?

Over on 'The Churn' I concluded my week of posts on the subject of enthusiasm. I thought it turned out well.

We miss you!

The Churn: Enthusiasm - the four obstacles

Sally,

Today on The Churn, I introduced three of the first four obstacles we all face when it comes to living enthusiastically, and from our 'personal calling'. I hope you are seeing the connection between managing our energy and living enthusiastically (from our personal calling sweet spot.) My selling pyramid starts at the top and works down from energy management to enthusiasm to likability to love (what you do) to uniqueness to urgency. Those are my six keys to being a champion in sales. Of course, these same six characteristics could be applied to any profession.

Stay whole (yesterday) and disinter dream today,

The Churn: Enthusiasm - the second key to successful selling

Good morning Sunshine,

How is Tuesday in Athens? It is beautiful here and we are all good, but we miss you! This week I am focusing on the second key to successful selling: enthusiasm. I love the way Paulo Coelho discusses enthusiasm in The Alchemist. We can fake enthusiasm (to a degree) but to really be enthusiastic we have to be willing to confront our own dreams. This is not easy stuff. Truly answering the call, finding your voice, living from the place where God wants you to live – that is scary stuff and a place where most people never go.

I really believe that it all starts with energy management, for if we are not challenging ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually then it will be virtually impossible to find our sweet spots, our soul's code, our (enthusiastic) voice.

Take the challenge, do the work, answer the bell . . .

Stay whole,

Dad

The Churn: We are oscillatory beings

Sally,

Mom told me you were in complete agreement with my special Sunday Nugget about reentry? Glad to know we are on the same wavelength. Speaking of wavelength, I hope you enjoy today's message over on The Churn. I decided to stick with energy management for one more day, because of it's importance. Tomorrow I will begin discussing the second characteristic of successful sales people: enthusiasm. I have selected a passage from The Alchemist, where Coelho talks of understanding "the language of enthusiasm."

No flatlining and make it an absolutely great Monday,

Dad

A special Sunday edition of Nuggets from Dad

Sally,

I hope your weekend has been a good one.

Mom and I spent some time yesterday discussing the summer and I wanted to write and share some thoughts. As our oldest child, you are the 'lucky one' who gets to lead the way for the other children, so let's discuss all of this when you have a chance. Nothing is written in stone (at this point) as we really want your input and feedback first. However, it is important to us that we have an agreed plan for the summer.

We are so proud of how well you have done in your first year of college. When you get back to Austin, remember that 'reentry' into day-to-day family life will need to be carefully considered. Here are the expectations we discussed yesterday, as well as some general notes.
  • Be an active and contributing member of the family. Please help in the kitchen as much as possible. Keep your room and the kid's den clean. Help with Lucy and respect your parents' need for a routine that is consistent with our jobs.
  • No guests (that we hear) after 11 p.m. on weekday nights. We go bed around 10 p.m. and when people come and go through the front door, it wakes us up.
  • On the weekend nights, we can extend the time to 12 p.m. for guests in and out of the front door.
  • When you go out, we will expect you to let us know where you are and when you will be home.
  • No boys sleeping in the girls wing of the house. This is an important area for Lucy and it is not fair to her to have it become a 'sleeping' area for guests.
We don't know what we are doing about transportation for you yet, but we will figure something out as soon as we can. A lot will depend on my job status. Caroline will be moving by the end of May, so the pool house will be converted back to a kids recreation room, and will give you some space to hang out with friends.

Just wanted to put this out to you, so we can all get in agreement. We would love to hear your feedback on all of this. Let's keep praying for dad's job search, because a lot of what we will need to do (financially) will depend on my search.

Love,

Dad

The Churn: Are you successfully osscillating your energy?

Sally,

I had a meeting this morning with a young woman whom I think you would really like. She is recently our of UT, where she majored in business. She works for The Princeton Review. I am hoping she will be in one of my small groups, where I am formulating a plan to facilitate a group of young professionals through a self-branding/self-awareness program. I want to time it where you can participate in one of the groups this summer.

Stay fit,

Sally,

How's it going kiddo? All good here, just networking like a fool and trying to find a job. I've been thinking a lot about your self-branding and really want to help you this summer start a Website, so you have a place to feature your work. I am considering putting together some small groups of young professionals who would help each other with self-branding. What do you think? Would you want to participate?

We need to catch up by phone. Maybe later this afternoon?

The Churn: Why energy is so important

Sally,

I bet you remember a little bit about energy from our Sunday School classes? What is more important, managing energy or managing time? Is an engaged person's life more like a marathon or a series of sprints? Do you avoid stress or seek stress? Is downtime important? Do you understand the importance of rituals?

Woman power,

Dad

P.S. Call me sometime! I miss you!

Stay Whole Tuesday - sorry I missed your call

Sally,

I saw you called earlier today and tried to call you back. Mom said you had some good news from your adviser? I have been back at Lions Municipal all day watching Westlake Golf. We qualified two teams for Regionals and Emily had another nice round today, only slightly marred by one high number. She shot an 84, after taking a nine on number 16 when her ball was lodged between two trees. Otherwise, two amazing days of golf and we are very proud of how hard she has worked this year and how she is such a great teammate and leader. Reminds me of her older sister and all those lessons learned through Hyline!

Lucy still fighting off some kind of crud, but hopefully she will be back in action tomorrow. I put $300 in your account last night, so make that last through the month. I will be writing about 'energy' the rest of the week on 'The Churn' so send me your thoughts? What is more important, managing your time or managing your energy?

Stay whole,

Dad
